Quensus has been recognized by Utilities Business Review Magazine as the exclusive recipient of “Top Water Management Solution in Europe 2025,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry. This profile has been developed by the Utilities Business Review research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Dr Dan Simmons, Managing Director.
Dr Dan Simmons, Managing DirectorWater damage starts small; faint stains across a wall or a quiet trickle that goes unnoticed. Though seemingly harmless at first, it can jeopardise a property’s structural integrity and lead to serious health and financial consequences—a lesson Dr Dan Simmons learned the hard way.
While renovating his first home, he didn’t expect that slow leaks hidden behind plaster would turn his dream project into a costly, mould-ridden ordeal. While simple leak detection alerts were available, Dr Simmons saw a need for proactive prevention—a complete system that learns and acts automatically. The experience—part frustration, part revelation—stayed with him.
Determined to create a solution, Dr Simmons founded Quensus in 2015. From overcoming the hurdles of being the first-to-market to weathering the strain of the pandemic, the company has surpassed every obstacle to become an industry leader in smart water management.
“Our origin story is baked into our DNA and forces us to think differently,” says Dr Simmons, managing director. “We are a team dedicated to safeguarding the spaces where people live and work by harnessing the power of advanced AI-powered technology.”
Dr Simmons is an AI technician and water conservationist with nearly two decades of academic and industry leadership. After earning his PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham, he developed dynamic-threshold, leak-detection algorithms that continue to serve as the foundation of his research and innovations in water conservation. He continues to drive Quensus’ vision and innovation.
Intelligence at the Core
At Quensus, water management isn’t a one-off hardware sale. It has built a complete, intelligently orchestrated ecosystem to help properties manage water as a strategic resource and reduce waste. Its offerings stand out for their intelligence and adaptability, while a comprehensive, customer-centred approach guarantees every solution delivers real-world impact.
We are not a company that develops solutions in a vacuum. Client feedback is the engine of our innovation.
The app’s benefits extend beyond that. During the pandemic, it emerged as the only effective tool for Legionella prevention. Clients were able to remotely monitor and manage flushing routines in dormant commercial buildings, preventing bacteria build-up. The unanticipated use case demonstrated the adaptability of Quensus’ technology and the foresight of its data-rich foundation.LeakNet also serves as a central hub for managing hot and cold water, rainwater harvesting and broader on-site water systems, creating a unified control point for clients. The system’s versatility strengthens its impact. It fits a wide range of pipe sizes and building configurations, proving to be a viable solution for every type of property.
Quensus recognises that without the ability to communicate, even the best safety system becomes a burden to manage. LeakNet maintains constant communication through robust Wi-Fi (now including support for the high-speed 5GHz band) and cellular connectivity. Future products will extend this reliability through integration with LoRaWAN and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocols, further reducing site management burdens and broadening deployment flexibility.
“Together, LeakNet and FlowReporter transform passive plumbing into an intelligent, responsive infrastructure, detecting issues and acting swiftly to keep buildings protected from leaks at all times,” says Dr Simmons.
Guaranteed Outcomes Powered by Seamless Integration
The inability to easily integrate with existing utility infrastructure has prevented modern water management technologies from scaling. In an era of increasing focus on resource efficiency and EU-level water resilience targets, Quensus’ solutions transform water monitoring from a disruptive overhaul into a logical, minimal-friction upgrade. LeakNet seamlessly ties into the main water supply and interfaces with existing meters and valves.
For organisations managing extensive facilities, multi-site portfolios or water-intensive operations, identifying silent leaks or inefficiencies can translate into tens of thousands of pounds saved annually per building. Quensus’ impact is best illustrated in the results achieved at the Travis Perkins headquarters in Leicester. Facing the familiar and costly problem of undetected leaks and unnecessary consumption, Travis Perkins installed two LeakNet smart valves. The outcomes were dramatic.
The automated shutoff routines delivered an immediate 29 per cent reduction in water costs without any manual intervention. FlowReporter’s detailed analytics helped the team identify and repair hidden leaks, resulting in an additional 42 per cent reduction in water usage.
A 71 per cent cut in water consumption, over £5,000 in annual savings and nearly two tonnes of carbon emissions avoided, demonstrated the financial and environmental value of smart water management. Return on investment was the most compelling part; the system paid for itself in just over nine months.
The branch manager at Travis Perkins noted “Thousands of pounds could have been washing down the drain” without the LeakNet system.
The operational impact is equally significant for construction and commercial clients. A site manager at Galliford Try highlighted how real-time reports allow teams to actively manage their water use, support sustainability certifications like BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) and minimise their environmental footprint. Instead of treating water as a passive utility, FlowReporter turns it into a continuously managed resource.
Actively Listening, Learning and Implementing
The evolution of the Quensus’ solutions is shaped as much by customer relationships as by technical innovation. Clients frequently express that the standout benefit is the confidence the system delivers through constant oversight. Feedback loops are central to its innovation strategy.
Feedback loops are central to its innovation strategy. Instead of building features in isolation, Quensus treats every customer interaction as a source of intelligence. Early experiences revealed that even the most advanced product can fall short if installation quality varies. That insight prompted investment in the development of a nationwide network of certified installers and an installation-focused app developed in collaboration with technicians. By embedding contractor experience directly into product design, Quensus has strengthened reliability and consistency across every deployment.
“We are not a company that develops solutions in a vacuum. Client feedback is the engine of our innovation,” says Dr Simmons.
The loop of listening, learning and implementing is core to the Quensus process. Further input from the field has prompted user experience refinements on its platform. It has remained grounded, agile and aligned with real-world challenges, even as the technology becomes more sophisticated.
Values at the Core, Excellence at the Forefront
Clarity of purpose is rooted in a set of guiding values that shape every decision. Innovation and excellence drive the team to push beyond existing standards, investing heavily in research and development to ensure its technology is not just current but also sets the standard for the future of water management. This focus on advancement goes hand in hand with its commitment to delivering the best possible customer experience. From initial consultation to installation and ongoing support, Quensus listens closely and adapts its solutions to meet real-world needs, ensuring every engagement delivers tangible results.
Equally important is the culture of honesty and transparency that guides interactions with clients, partners, suppliers and employees. Sustainability and responsibility are woven into both product and practice. By re-engineering components to use recycled plastics, Quensus showcases its dedication to making a positive impact. It also champions the local UK economy, proudly bearing the ‘Made in Britain’ emblem.
Thoughtful innovation is underpinned by multiple industry honours, including the Travis Perkins Innovation Award, the Ingenuity International Entrepreneurship Award, the Rushlight Award and selection as a Pitch@ Palace finalist. Quensus was also named to the InsurTech 100 list for 2025. These achievements are a testament to its core belief that meaningful progress comes from solving real-world problems with clarity, rigour and empathy.
Turning plumbing networks into a real-time source of operational insight, Quensus has set a new benchmark for intelligent water management. Rather than reacting after problems arise, its systems think, learn and act within seconds, giving operators a long-needed level of visibility and control.
